“Why is it so quiet? It's too early for everyone to have left.” Still tired and sore from the long journey home, you were finding it almost impossible to leave your bed. Even as uncomfortable as it was. You looked up at the stone ceiling of the castle and sighed. “Better get up.”  After rolling over, you pushed yourself out of bed and stretched, bringing the blood back to your extremities. “I'm starving, I hope it's time to eat.” Quickly dressing, you walked out into the hall, it was empty. “Whoa, maybe everyone did leave.”

“Not everyone, but just about.” Walking up beside you was Chrom, a content smile on his face. “It's good to see you awake. You've been sleeping almost three days. I was worried you may have become ill from the long trip.”

“I've been what?” Shocked, you stopped and stared at him. “You're kidding, right? I mean, I was tired, but not that tired.”

Chrom shook his head. “I'm serious. You did take quite a blow during that last battle. That's also why just about everyone's gone.” He seemed a little sad by the fact. “Everyone has respective homes, so most of them stayed here only long enough to rest. But more importantly, you're probably starving. I was on my way to lunch. Care to join me?”

“Su-. Wait, it's time for lunch already?” Your jaw dropped. Chrom only nodded and held out his hand for you. “I guess you really weren't teasing me. Now I feel lazy.” You took his hand and followed him to a large, grand dining area. It was big enough for a few dozen people to all eat there at once. “I-is it just you and me eating in here?”

“Unless Lissa decides to join us, yes. We could always sit on the balcony if you wanted to. The sun's actually shining today.” It had rained for weeks on end while during the war. You honestly thought you might become amphibious it was so bad.

“Sure. It's been a while since I saw the sun.” Chrom seemed happy with your answer and asked the servants to bring your food outside. “You know, this is the first time I've been inside a castle. It's a shame I slept the experience away.”

The food was quickly brought out and the two of you began to eat. “Nothing says you have to leave. It's pretty empty around here most of the time. And don't take this the wrong way, but where would you go if you were to leave?”

Chrom was right. You had no where to go. The only people you knew were a part of the war, and they were all gone. “You have a very good point there. I have no idea what I would do, or where I would go. The only thing I know is war. I suppose I could always become a mercenary. That wouldn't be too hard to adapt to.” You dropped your head slightly, a feeling of hopelessness consuming you.

With a gentle, but strong hand, Chrom lifted your chin back up, a kind smile lighting up his face. “Like I said before, no one is asking you to leave. To be quite honest, I'd prefer it if you stayed with Lissa and me.” His words caused the servants to giggle and whisper. “Lissa needs another female she can talk to. As much as I care for her, there are some things I'm sure she'd rather discuss with a woman than with me.” He blushed.

“Oh, I can understand that.” You nodded. “It's just, I don't want to be a mooch, living off of your kindness and hospitality.”

“Hmm, I see your point.” Placing an elbow on the table, Chrom propped his head up and thought. “I could always give you a job here. We had quite a few people desert us during the war. Not that I can blame them. Just the same, we're short handed.”

This solution excited you much more than it should have. But if you were honest with yourself, there was no one in this world you trusted better than Chrom, no one you knew better or cared more for than him. It was only logical that you should want to stay with him. Your thoughts caused your face to turn red. Pushing them aside, you managed to speak again. “That would be wonderful. What would you have me do?”

“I hadn’t thought of that.” Chrom's blush worsened. “Let me think a second.” A few silent moments passed and when Chrom finally spoke again, you realized you'd been staring at him instead of eating. “You're smart, good at planning, and cunning. I see no reason why you couldn't stay my strategist. It may be peaceful now, and I do hope it stays that way, but you never know when I may need you.” His words once again caused the help to giggle.

“That would be perfect.” You were hardly able to contain your joy. “Thank you so much Chrom, you have no idea how much I appreciate this.” It took everything in you not to reach over the small, wooden table and bring him into the tightest hug you could.

“So you accept my offer?” He laughed. “That's good news, I thought I might have to bribe you to stay.” He winked teasingly. For a third time now, the servants began snickering. “What in the world is so funny over there?”

Looking over at the giggling women, you shook your head, just as confused as Chrom was. “I have no idea. Maybe it's an inside joke.”

“There you are. Chrom, Chrom, is it true?” Lissa ran up to the table, out of breath, her hair and clothes in utter disarray. She roughly grasped hold of Chrom's shoulders and stared at him. “Well, is it?”

“Calm down Lissa, please.” He gently removed her hands from his shoulders and smiled weakly. “Now, is what true?”

“The whole castle is talking about it.”Chrom only stared, waiting to know what “it” was. “Everyone's talking about you getting married. How could you not know that? Shesh.”

Suddenly it all made sense. The giggling, the cooing and the annoying stares. “I should have known.” Chrom rubbed his eyebrows, flustered and annoyed. “Why can't I just eat lunch with a female without everyone around me speculating?”

“I don't know. But I'd go do some damage control if I were you.” Lissa smiled, obviously enjoying her brother's embarrassment. “I was just in town, and the word on the street is you two are lovers.” She chuckled. “Well, I'll see you two later, you love-birds you.”

“Lissa that is not helping the situation!” Chrom shouted after her, but she didn't listen. All at once the maids, cooks, butlers, and other servants dispersed, all talking about a royal wedding. “Well, we're doomed. We can end a war with swords, axes, and lances. But once the women start gossiping, there's no stopping it.”
