After a long day of school and club activities, you were finally allowed to go back to your room. You would have been back about an hour ago had Dionysus not kept you in the cafeteria, trying to explain the difference between red, pink and white wines to you. You hadn't been even slightly interested in the subject, but he was too excited to teach you for you to stop him. Sighing at the memory, you opened your bedroom door and stepped inside. Before your foot was even in the door, you heard a noise coming from inside. Sure someone must have snuck into your room while you were away, you hurried through the threshold and found a place to hide. The noise seemed like it was coming from your bathroom, but soon moved closer to your bed. Desperate to see who had broken in, you looked around the corner as quietly as you could.

There, sitting on your bed with a happy expression resting on his face, was Anubis. He was holding the doll he'd given you during Thoth's little experiment in his hands and quietly talking to himself.

Figuring he must have come back for the doll, and nothing more, you decided you would just leave him be. He would leave on his own soon enough. Not wanting to scare him, you took a step back and tried to leave your room. When you did this, however, you stumbled on a small pile of schoolbooks. The loud clatter of the books falling was more than enough to catch your visitors attention. “Dang it!”

As soon as he heard your voice, Anubis came running. “Ka?” Though he seemed worried for your safety, you could tell that he was also rather scared. The way he was clutching to the doll made that obvious.

“I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you.” Trying not to show how embarrassed tripping had left you, you quickly tidied up the books and placed them on your desk. “I wasn't sure who was in my room, so I hid. I thought you might be Loki or something.” You smiled, hoping the simple, yet genuine gesture would make him more comfortable. “I'm glad you're not.”

“Ka-bara.” Anubis nodded, showing that he understood you.

“I wasn't sure if you wanted that back or not.” You pointed at the doll he still held tightly in his hands. “So I've been keeping it safe for you.” In all honesty, you had slept with the doll every night since you'd gotten it. Despite how small it was, it was incredibly soft and comforting. “Actually, I've been sleeping a lot better since I've had it.” Not wanting to get off track and risk boring Anubis,  you refocused on the subject at hand. “Anyway, I figured you'd come get it eventually if you wanted it, and you did.”

Anubis quickly shook his head, then, somewhat timidly, tried to give you the doll. “Ka-bara-bara.” The closer your hand got to his, the wider his eyes became. You weren't positive, but it looked like he had completely stopped breathing.

You kept your movements slow, so as not to spook him, but it didn't seem to work. The minute you had the doll in your hand, he took a step back, trying to create as much space between the two of you as possible. After all this time, he still treated you like you were a total stranger. Everyone else had warmed up to you, at least, mostly everyone. Why hadn't he? “Are you still scared of me?”

Refusing to look at you, Anubis turned his eyes to the ground and awkwardly shuffled his feet. “Bara.” There was something adorable about the little display. It was enough to let you know, even though you couldn't understand his strange way of speaking, that you were right.

“Really? But there's nothing even slightly scary about me.” Instead of being offended by this, you started to giggle. “You know, it's kind of weird. The one person you don't seem to be scared of at all is the scariest person here.”

Your words seemed to shock Anubis. “Ka-bara?” Looking confused, and maybe even a little offended, he tilted his head to the side and waited for you to explain yourself.

“I'm not saying that I don't like Thoth or anything like that, because I do like him.” Trying to find a way to word things so they wouldn't sound rude or disrespectful, you cleared your throat. “He's just, kind of intimidating. That's all.”

Despite your best attempt to explain things to him, Anubis didn't seem to be catching on. It was understandable though. Thoth was always kind and supportive of him, so why would he think that Thoth was intimidating? To Anubis, Thoth probably came across as an older brother or mentor. Maybe even a friend. “Ka-bara-bara. Ka.” As he spoke, Anubis started glancing towards the door to your room.

Noticing the way he was eyeing the doorway, you giggled again. “Are you trying to sneak away from me?” Not wanting him to feel trapped, you moved out of his way and smiled. “If you want to go, you can. I'm not going to make you stay. That being said, you're more than welcome to stay if you want to. Either way, it's fine with me.”

Already looking more relaxed, he nodded and finally, started to smile. It had been so long since he'd smiled at you, you had actually forgotten just how contagious his smile was. “Ka.”

“I guess that means you're going then?” You had expected as much, but you were still a little disappointed You wanted to get to know him better, but doing so was difficult, especially with the language barrier. The fact that he shied away from you didn't help the situation either. Still, you hoped that he'd come around eventually, and sooner rather than later. “Before you do go though, was there a reason you snuck in here?”

Suddenly looking terribly shocked, Anubis froze. Eyes wide, he slowly shook his head, trying to deny the truth. “B-bara.”

You could tell he was lying, but you didn't want to accuse him of that. If you did, he'd run away for sure. You were going to have to find another way to approach the situation. “Are you okay? You look scared. Is something wrong?”

“K-ka! Ka-bara-bara!” Suddenly waving around his hands in a dramatic display, Anubis began talking so quickly it made your head spin. Even if you had been able to understand his language, you wouldn't have been able to make out what he was saying.

“Anubis, slow down.” Taking a step towards him, you reached out your hand, but stopped before you actually touched him. If you wanted him to calm down, you knew you had to keep your distance. “I don't really understand what you're trying to say. You're going to have to find another way to tell me what's going on.”

Forcing himself to calm down, Anubis closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Though he was still visibly uncomfortable, he was better than before. “Ka-bara.”

Unsure how to figure things out without being able to communicate with him in a normal fashion, you started asking simple questions. Ones that he could either nod, or shake his head to, depending on the answer. You weren't sure if it would work, but for now, it was worth a shot. “Let's start somewhere easy, okay? Did someone send you here?”

The look in his eyes was answer enough. You'd gotten it right, and on your first try. Knowing he couldn't fool you, Anubis looked to the ground again and nodded. When he spoke, there was a slightly guilty tone to his voice. “Bara...”

“So someone did send you.” You tried to figure out who could have sent him, but you couldn't figure it out. The only one he really spent any time with, or took orders from was Thoth. But if Thoth wanted to talk to you, he would have just done it himself. “Who sent you?”

Anubis tightly closed his eyes and shook his head, refusing to tell you. “Ka-bara-bara!” You weren't sure what to make of his words, but as soon as he had spoken them, he darted out of your room and rushed down the hall.

“H-hey, wait up!” Still wanting your answers, you quickly followed him out of your room. You knew you couldn't catch him, but maybe you could at least see where he was going. If you had that information, you might be able to figure out who he was going to see, and who had sent him. After about a minute of chasing him, you knew where he was going. He was headed directly for the library. “That can't be good.” He was going to see Thoth. As soon as you realized this, you stopped following him and hurried back towards your room. If Thoth thought that you had upset Anubis, there was no telling what sort of trouble you would be in. Maybe if he thought you were asleep he wouldn't bother you. It was worth a try. Now in your room, you quickly closed the door and turned out the lights. All that was left to do now, was wait.
