“There we go. That should do it.” After slipping on an old, over sized T-shirt, you looked at yourself in a mirror to make sure you were properly covered and then turned to face Yusuke. “Alright, I think I'm finally ready to do this thing.” So excited you could barely contain yourself, you rubbed your hands together as a wide, mischievous grin spread across your face. “I've been looking forward to this all week. Let's hurry up and get messy already.”

Having finally prepared everything, Yusuke too slipped on an old T-shirt. Seeing him wear something so out of character only made your smile that much wider. Completely unaware of how strange he looked to you, Yusuke carried on as if nothing was out of the ordinary at all. “I really don't expect that the two of us will be getting all that messy. It's everything else that's in trouble.”

“Oh?” He may not have wanted to get messy, but that simply wasn't an option for you. “I wouldn't be so sure about that if I were you.” Growing more eager by the second, you began looking over the dozen or so bowls of paint Yusuke had aligned on a nearby table. “Getting messy is going to be half the fun. So, if I have my way, we're going to be walking works of art when this is all said and done.”

Hand over his heart, Yusuke gave a gentle nod. “I have a feeling that as romantic as that sounds in theory, the end result will be anything but.”

“Your feeling's probably right. We're going to be a sticky, but very colorful mess. No doubt about it.” Unable to wait any longer, you picked up one of the many sea sponges stacked on the table and gave it a squeeze. The strange texture took you a bit by surprise, but didn't deter you in the slightest. “Now let's do this.”

“Very well.” Nodding again, Yusuke took a large step back to ensure none of the paint splatter would reach him. “Ladies first.”

“Why thank you. Don't mind if I do.” Honestly, you would have gone first whether he had wanted you to or not. You had chosen your color at least five minutes ago and didn't want to risk him getting to it before you. Sponge now soaked in that color, you lifted it out of the paint and locked your eyes on the blank canvas before you. “Here goes nothing.” After picking the exact spot you wanted to hit, you threw your sponge towards the canvas. As soon as you let go, you knew you had made a huge mistake. The slippery, yet slightly sticky consistency of the paint made aiming much harder than you had expected. In what seemed like slow motion, the sponge hit the wall a full foot from the canvas and fell to the floor with a splat. More than a little embarrassed by your failure, you let out an awkward laugh. “Well, it's a good thing we covered everything in here with tarps.”

“Agreed.” Trying to hold back a chuckle, Yusuke covered his mouth with his hand and cleared his throat. “It seems you're much more proficient at throwing snowballs than you are at throwing sea sponges.” Ready for his chance, Yusuke took a deep breath. “Let's see how I fair.” With grace befitting a ballerina, he tossed the ball of paint towards the canvas, hitting it almost exactly in the center. The once white slate was now speckled from top to bottom with a soft, creamy yellow.

“Oh, nice one. You're a natural at this.” Paying little attention to what color you picked next, you took your turn. This time when you threw the sponge, you actually hit the target. “There we go. I was afraid I had lost my aim.”

“I must admit that after your first throw, I thought the same thing. Considering what we're doing, that would have been a bit of a tragedy.” For the next while, the two of you took turns marking the canvas. The longer the two of you did this however, the more Yusuke seemed to fret over the colors and locations you were picking. Before long, he had actually started to plan your next moves, telling you exactly where to aim and which color to choose. You knew he probably couldn't help it, but you had to stop him before it was too late. If he kept this up the painting would end up boring and planned, and that was the last thing you wanted to happen.“Why don't you try to hit right around here with that lavender?”

Sure, that color would have looked nice where he was telling you to throw it, but looking nice wasn't the point. The point was to have fun and see what happened. “Yusuke, you've got to cut it out. You're supposed to be going wild, not planning everything out. The idea here is not to think and see what happens.” Grabbing him by the shoulders, you gave Yusuke a little shake. “Come on, forget about color theory or whatever it's called and just go wild!”

“You're right. Forgive me.” Even though he knew you had a very good point, it wasn't going to be easy for him to do what you were asking. “Still, I'm not entirely sure I know how to “Go wild”.” The very thought was enough to make him chuckle. “I'll do my best though.”

“Good. As long as you try I won't complain.” Hopeful, you let go of his shoulders, leaving behind your messy hand prints. Trusting he would keep your words in mind, you grabbed another sponge and prepared to finish your collaborative work of art. “Then let's hurry and finish this up. I'm starting to feel sticky.”

“As you wish.” With very little paint left, and hardly any blank spaces left to fill with color, it didn't take long before you found yourselves out of supplies. You could tell just by the way he was looking at the canvas that Yusuke wanted to continue adding to the painting, but he managed to stop himself. “It seems we've run out of paint. I guess this means we're finished then.”

Both excited to see the completed painting, and a little sad that it was already finished, you agreed. “I guess it does.”

“Then all that's left is for us to sign it.” Without any hesitation at all, Yusuke lifted a thin tipped brush from the table, dipped it into a bit of black ink, then knelt down to carefully sign the piece in an inconspicuous area ear the bottom.

Slightly reluctant to do the same, you slowly accepted the brush from him, but made no move to sign it as he had. “Shouldn't we at least look at it first? I don't know if I want to sign my name on something that looks horrible.”

“Absolutely not.” With a firm shake of his head, Yusuke passionately began to explain why. “Whether or not it looks horrible doesn't change the fact that we made it. Even if this painting is one enormous mess, we have to own up to it. Just like in life, every artist makes mistakes or paints something they aren't proud of. You have to own those mistakes and use them to better yourself in the future. Signing this painting will remind you of how far you've come and how much you've progressed.” Speaking from the heart, Yusuke closed his eyes as he firmly clutched his paint splatter T-shirt just over his heart. “It's imperative.”

“I guess that's true.” You still weren't sure you wanted to sign it, but there was no use arguing with him when he got this way. Besides, it wasn't like anyone else was ever going to see this, so what did it really matter? With your name now neatly signed next to Yusuke's, you placed the brush on the table and attempted to wipe off your hands. “There. Now it's finished.”

“Perfect. Now we can admire the fruits of our labor.” Taking your hand in his, Yusuke stepped back and proudly looked over what the two of you had made. As soon as he saw it, he couldn't help but smile. “What do you think?”

Really, it looked like a mess. Not just the canvas, but the entire room was covered in paint. Still, the more you looked at the painting, the more you liked it. Somehow, you could tell which splatters of paint belonged to you, and which belonged to Yusuke. It was as if both of your personalities had made it onto the canvas and had meshed perfectly somewhere in the middle. Grinning from ear to ear, you chest began to swell with pride. “Well, I don't know about you, but I think this might be the best thing I've ever painted.”

“Oh?” Suddenly looking terribly confused, Yusuke blinked several times before turning his eyes away from the painting and focusing on you. When his eyes met yours, they lit up in an instant. No matter how hard he might have been trying not to smile, he couldn't hide his amusement from you. “It's the only thing you've ever painted.”

He was right, but that wasn't important right now. Taking his face in your paint covered hands, you clicked your tongue at him. “Yusuke, Yusuke, Yusuke.” Lifting yourself onto your tip toes, you placed a gentle kiss on the corner of his mouth before finishing your sentence. “Don't ruin the moment.”
