Head hanging low and shoulders dropped forward, you walked out of the classroom, down the hall and out of the school building. Until now, you had been holding your breath in your lungs, afraid that if you said anything, Thoth might hear you. As soon as you felt you were safe from his reprimands, you released the breath you'd been holding in the form of a loud sigh. “I'm glad that's over with. That was just awful.”

“What was?” Sitting comfortably on sturdy a tree branch, just above your head, Loki called out to you in a curious voice. “You're leaving class pretty late. Did Thoth keep you late so he could yell at you? That's what it sounded like.”

Loki's sudden appearance took you by surprise, causing you to gasp from the shock. This shock only lasted a second, but the look on your face was more than enough to make Loki smirk. A little flustered by the events that had led up to now, you found yourself stuttering slightly when you tried to speak. “N-no, not exactly.” Thoth hadn't even raised his voice to you, so there was no way Loki could have heard anything. Not unless he had been eavesdropping, that is, which, unfortunately, you wouldn't have put past him.

“Not exactly?” Arching his brow at you, Loki leaned forward so far, he threatened to fall off of his perch. “Care to elaborate a little bit? Maybe I can help you out.”

“Not really.” Wishing only to put the conversation with Thoth out of your mind, you shook your head and quickly stepped away from him. Afraid you had seemed terribly rude, you turned around just long enough to thank him. “Thank you for the offer though.”

Hopping down from the tree, Loki followed after you and continued to pester you with his questions. Though there was always a mischievous tone to his voice, it was even more evident now than it usually was. This made it obvious that he wasn't at all interested in helping you. He was only interested in hearing a bit of gossip. “No? Why not?” Now that he was interested, there would be no getting rid of Loki until he finally became bored with you.

Careful not to look at him, you focused your eyes directly in front of you. Even then, however, you could see him grinning. “Because, it's embarrassing and I really don't want to talk about it.”

“Embarrassing, huh?” Refusing to let the subject die until he'd gotten his answers, Loki grabbed your arm, just above the elbow and pulled you to a halt. With you firmly in his grasp, he turned you around, making you face him. There, resting on his lips, was the smile you'd been trying so hard not to see. You didn't know what it was about his smile, but every time you saw it, it caused you to blush like a mad woman. Fully aware of this, Loki pulled you a bit closer and allowed his smile to go crooked. Somehow, this crookedness greatly added to his appeal. “How was your talk with Thoth embarrassing? You must have been talking about something other than school if you're this against telling me. Hmm, maybe I should just start guessing and you can tell me when I've figured it out.”

Sure you knew where his mind was going, you quickly shook your head before he could start guessing. Wanting to put his idea to rest before it was too late, you assured him that he was wrong. “T-that's not true at all. We were talking about school, and only school. Nothing else.”

Loki didn't believe you, and you knew it. “You might have been talking about school at first, but there has to be something other than that.” He snorted. “What about school could possibly be embarrassing?”

Figuring it was worse to let him make his own assumptions than it was to actually tell him the truth, you gave in. “I-it's my grades. They're really not as good as they should be, and Master Thoth is pretty upset with me about that.” Feeling your face heat up at your admission, you turned your eyes to the ground and sighed. “He says that I have no excuse for my poor marks, especially since I'm not a part of any after-school activities. If I don't do better on my next assignment, he's going to get someone to tutor me.” Wincing at the idea, you released a depressed sounding breath. “I don't want everyone here to know that I'm doing poorly.”

Expecting something much more interesting, Loki waited several seconds before speaking, just to make sure there wasn't more to your story. When he did speak, his words were laced with his already apparent lack of enthusiasm. “That's it? That's what has you so upset?”

“What do you mean by that? That's a big deal.” You didn't say anything, but you were a little annoyed that he would practically beg you for an answer, only to react the way he had when you told him. “At least, it is to me. If I don't do well on my next test, I might not be able to graduate. That would be horrible.” While you were still talking, Loki turned on his heel and started to walk away from you as if you had said nothing at all. You weren't sure why, but you found yourself rushing after him. “H-hey, where are you going?”

Without so much as looking at you, Loki shrugged. “I haven't thought about it, so I'm not sure yet.”

His flippant, nonchalant answer was more than enough to aggravate you, but you were more offended that he would just walk away from you, than you were angry with him. “If you don't have anywhere to be, or anything to do right now, why did you decide to leave so suddenly?” Unable to hide the fact that he'd hurt your feelings a bit, you drooped your shoulders and began to twist and pull at your fingers nervously. “I was talking to you, you know. Leaving like that was really rude of you.”

“I got bored.” Making no apology, he shrugged. “Besides, you didn't want to tell me about your problem in the first place, so I figured you really wouldn't care all that much if I stopped listening.”

He did have a point, but the fact that he would walk away without so much as a good-bye was still rude. “That's true, but you di-.”

Not waiting for you to finish your sentence, Loki cut you off. “See? I knew it.” Stopping suddenly, Loki spun around and looked at you. He leaned forward slightly and narrowed his eyes as if studying you. “You didn't actually want my help with something related to school, did you?”

“Well, you did offer to help me just a moment ago. Not directly, but you said you'd help me with my problem. I know you're really smart too, so I thought that maybe...” Even as you spoke, you couldn't help but wonder if having someone like him help you do anything was a good idea. He'd either grow bored with studying and leave without offering any real help, or he might try to make things more fun for himself by playing tricks on you. Honestly, neither of those options seemed all that favorable and you doubted that anything would be accomplished. Maybe it was best to find someone else to help you. Silently deciding against your original idea, you shook your head and took a step back. “N-never mind. Forget I said anything. I'm sorry I stopped you.”

Loki's eyes narrowed even more. Now that you didn't want his help, he was once again interested. “I'll help you.” Quickly standing up straight, the corner of Loki's mouth curled into a proud smirk. You could already see a glimmer of mischief in his eyes, making you that much more weary of accepting any help from him. “Meet me in the library, after school tomorrow.

“N-no, really, that's not necessary. I don't want you to feel like I'm trying to force you into anything.” Firmly shaking your head, you tried to assure him that you didn't need his help. “I can always ask Tsukito if I really need to. He takes really good notes. At least, that's what I've heard anyway. If that's the case, he should be able to help me without having to do anything.” Agreeing with yourself, you nodded. “That's probably going to be the easiest thing to do. So don't worry about it.”

Ignoring everything you'd just said, Loki reached into his pocket and pulled out a small piece of electric blue candy. Taking you by the wrist, he placed the candy in your palm and curled your fingers around it, causing the plastic wrapper to crinkle quietly. “I'll see you after school tomorrow. Don't forget.” Grinning in a way that made your entire body flush, he softly kissed your fingers and walked away without saying another word.

Sighing to yourself, you uncurled your fingers and looked down at the candy. The bright color alone hinted to the fact that it might be sour, but when you smelled it, you were able to confirm this. Wrinkling your nose at the pungent smell, you thought about tossing it in the nearest trash bin. Before you could, however, another idea popped into your mind. “Hmm, maybe I should save this. It might come in handy.”
