Almost a year had passed since the last of the kidnappings had occurred. The last one, of course, being your own. Despite claiming that he wanted to turn himself around, Adachi hadn't been willing to turn himself in. Though even if he had, there wouldn’t have been any proof of what he'd done. Dojima would have thought the stress had finally gotten to him, and probably would have had him committed. Other than you, and a few high school students, no one knew what had actually happened. To everyone else in Inaba, the kidnappings and murders had simply, stopped. Over the last year, you, and your personality had changed considerably. The fact that you knew the truth made it difficult for you to look at anything the same way as you had before, especially Adachi. He wasn't the dorky, babbling screw up that everyone thought he was. There was a lot more to him than meets the eye. He was dangerous, and sometimes keeping that a secret was quite the burden. Still, you couldn't bring yourself to just walk away from him. You'd promised to help him, and you intended to keep that promise, no matter what.

“Hey, there you are. You're pretty late you know.” Standing from his seat on the playground swings, Adachi greeted you with a crooked, goofy smile. “Usually I'm the one to keep you waiting, not the other way around. Everything's alright, right?”

“Everything's fine. I didn't mean to be late, but it's just so nice out, I couldn't bring myself to hurry.” Returning his smile, you sat down on the swing next to him and slowly rocked your feet back and forth. Ever since he'd tossed you into the TV, you were very careful to meet with him only when in public. Adachi had to have realized this after a year, but since he really couldn't blame you for your caution, said nothing about it. “You don't have to go back to work or something, do you?

Adachi sat back down on his swing and let out a quiet, tired sounding sigh. “No. Dojima went home for the night, so I should be off the hook until morning. Unless, of course, something comes up, as it often does.”

“Oh, that's good.” As you drifted to and fro on the old, creaking swing, the cool Autumn  breeze filled the night air with the smell of freshly fallen leaves. It was still a little early, but you could already smell Winter coming. “You know, I thought after things settled down he'd stop being so hard on you. I guess I was wrong.”

“Well, we still don't have a culprit you know. Until we do, I don't think he'll ever calm down.” A bit uncomfortable referring to himself as the culprit, Adachi cleared his throat. “You know what next Thursday is?”

How could you possibly not know? It was a date that would be forever etched in your mind until the day you died. Even so, you wanted to give him the pleasure of telling you. You knew he had to be proud of himself, and you didn't want to ruin it for him. “Well, it's a Thursday. If I remember right, I think Aiya's is having a special, but other than that, I really can't think of anything.”

“No, not that.” Chuckling quietly, Adachi shook his head and began to tell you what you already knew. “Next Thursday marks one year, to the day. In a lot of ways, it doesn't seem like it's been that long, but in others, it feels like it's been much, much longer.” He took a deep, calming breath in, then slowly released it from his nose. “Things have really changed. Sometimes, I'm not really sure if it was for the better, but there's no going back now I guess.”

The fact that he was still unsure whether or not he was happy with his decision to change worried you, but you had to keep your hopes up. If he'd lasted this long without a single incident, there was no reason for him to revert. “I'm proud of you Adachi. People always say that people never change, and you've really proven them wrong. I'm glad you did too.”

“Yeah. I am too, I think.” A strange mixture of grief and happiness filled his clouded, grey eyes. Quickly changing the subject, Adachi firmly planted his feet on the ground, rose from his seat and stood in front of you. Oddly enough, he had started to blush. “I uh, I wanted to thank you, you know, for your help and such. I know it's probably not worth everything I've put you through, but I wanted to do something and this was the best thing I could come up with on my own.”

Confused, but undeniably curious, you tried to peek at whatever it was that he was now holding behind his back. “You don't have to do that. I offered to help you. I honestly wasn't expecting anything in return.”

“I know you weren't expecting anything in return. I've told you before, but you're the most forgiving person I know. You're so forgiving, I kind of feel like I'm taking advantage of you sometime. You're the only girl that's given me a second glance, and I don't want to lose you because you don't feel appreciated.” Adachi covered your mouth with his hand to keep you from arguing with him and grinned. “Besides, it'll help me ease my conscious a little bit.”

“Okay, now I'm all curious.” You stood from your comfortable spot on the swing and sighed, unable to hide your sudden interest from him. “What is it?”

“It's really not anything big, so don't be disappointed when I give it to you. We both know I don't understand females very well either, so I won't be surprised if you hate it.” A bit reluctantly, Adachi placed a small, black, pouch in your hand.

It was the kind of pouch that usually held jewelry, something you wouldn't expect to get from Adachi. Trying not to look too excited, you gently pulled the thin ties that kept the sack together and opened the top. Once you'd carefully retrieved the contents, you couldn't help but laugh. Inside was a necklace with a single pendant, fashioned to look like a retro style TV. “I love it, but really don't think anyone else is ever going to understand why I'm wearing a TV around my neck. Where did you even find it? A TV pendant isn't exactly the norm.”

“I didn't find it, per say. I kind of had it made especially for you.” The confession once again, left him blushing. “I just wanted something that had meaning, and I'm pretty sure TV's mean a lot more to us than they do most people.”

It was little gestures like these that let you know he really was trying. Honestly touched by the gift, you threw your arms around his shoulders and squeezed with all your might. “You really didn't have to do that for me, but thank you. It means more than you know.” After placing a kiss on his cheek, you released him from your embrace and held out the necklace for him. “Well, don't just stand there looking at me like that. Hurry up and help me put it on already.”

“O-oh, right.” With a nod, Adachi awkwardly took hold of the thin chain, turned you around and gently moved your hair to the side. “Heh. I've never done this before, so it might take a minute. I have to figure out how this little clip thing works.” After a few seconds of fumbling around, he finally managed to secure the chain. “There we go. I think I did that right.”

Just to be sure, you have the TV a slight tug. “It feels right to me.” Smiling brightly, you turned around and brought him back into your arms, this time, you didn't let him go. “I'm never going to take this off now you know. I'm going to wear it, just so you remember how far you've come.”

“I don't think I'll ever need to be reminded of that, but it's really not a bad idea.” Not sure how exactly to respond to your hug, Adachi lowered his face to the tender area between your neck and shoulder and snuggled you close to him. “I'm sure you already know this, but none of this would have been possible if I hadn't ever met you.”

For the first time in a while, you remembered why you'd decided to help him in the first place. Content to just stand there with him until the sun came back up, you closed the distance between your bodies and ran your fingers through his messy brown hair. “You keep saying that, but I'm sure you would have eventually come around on your own.”

Adachi pulled away from your hug and solemnly shook his head. “No, I wouldn't have. Trust me. I know my messed up, twisted mind better than anyone.” He tried to smile for you, but you could almost see him fighting away his past demons as he spoke. “I would have kept on going until I completely destroyed myself. I'm sure of it.”

“Don't worry Adachi. I'm not going anywhere.” Just as serious now as you were at the very beginning of this long, tiring journey, you lifted yourself on to your tiptoes and kissed the corner of his mouth. “I've stuck with you this long, haven't I? I don't plan on leaving. I'm going to see to it that you don't backslide.” As you fixed his crooked tie, you attempted to change the subject to something a bit more uplifting. “Now, we need to come up with some sort of celebration for this Thursday.” You feigned a thoughtful look, then, voiced your idea, hoping he would agree. “I was thinking about maybe going to Aiya's. They are having that special, and that was where we had our first date, you know. If Dojima actually lets you leave the office, I think it'd be the perfect place to celebrate.” Feeling a little sheepish for suggesting something without knowing his plans first, you bit your lower lip and furrowed your brows together. “You think you can get off?”

“I think I can convince Dojima to let me off early one night. If not, I'll just have to sneak out.” Blushing happily, Adachi sweetly cupped your face in his hand and softly rubbed his nose against yours. “I wouldn't miss our celebration for the world.”
