Wide awake, you silently lay in your bed and waited for your roommate's breathing to slow. Every other night, she fell asleep within fifteen or twenty minutes of getting in bed, but tonight it seemed like it was taking her hours. You were so eager to scurry out of your bed once again and sneak around campus, that holding still was almost an impossibility. Burying your face in your pillow, you quietly reassured yourself. “Just a few more minutes and I can get out of here. I can do this.” Clutching the pillow tightly in your hands, you took a deep breath in and tried your best to keep yourself calm. With nothing else to do, you closed your eyes and focused your ears on the sound of her breathing. Almost a full hour later, you were sure that she'd fallen asleep. Having never changed into your night clothes, you crept out of bed, tripping a bit as you did so, and slipped on your shoes. Holding your breath in your chest, you griped onto the doorknob and slowly, slowly pulled it open and stepped outside of your room. “I made it.”

“I warned you about this, multiple times.” Shocked to hear a voice other than your own, you stumbled backwards, falling against the door. Standing directly to your left, with an expressionless look on his face, was Yagari. “What do you think you're doing?”

“It's just you.” Though you'd recognized his voice as soon as you'd heard him, you had still been surprised to hear it. Trying to calm your now racing heart, you pushed yourself away from the dorm room door and sighed. “You scared me half to death. Don't do that kind of thing to me.” Shaking your head with disapproval, you attempted to step away from him. “What if I had screamed and woken up the whole house?”

Before you'd taken even a single step, Yagari took your hand in his and pulled you back to him. “Come with me.” Giving you no explanation, he pulled you away from your room, down the hall and out the front door. Once outside, he continued leading you through the pitch black school grounds.

“W-wait, where are we going? What's going on?” Suddenly worried that he might actually make good his threat to “Take care of you himself”, you began to struggle against him. You'd been scared by the things Yagari had said in the past, but he, as a person, had never actually scared you before right now. Due to the fact that there wasn't even the slightest hint of a moon tonight, you couldn't see his face, or where he was taking you. This fact only added to your fears. “I get it, this is getting old and you're really annoyed with me. I should really stop sneaking around or I might get hurt. I understand.”

Ignoring everything you were saying, Yagari continued on until you both reached a small, empty house. Once there, he pushed open the door and pulled you inside. Only now did he let go of your hand. “Wait there.” Trusting you wouldn't leave, he stepped away from you and lit a candle for a bit of light. You weren't sure why he didn't simply turn on the lights, but you didn't question him. Now that there was at least enough light to see by, Yagari turned back around to face you. “Why did you leave your room tonight?”

There was a serious, commanding tone in his voice that demanded an answer. Even so, it wasn't necessarily cold, or cruel. Still, you saw no reason to withhold anything from him. “I was going to go looking for you. I wanted to talk to you about something.”

“Oh? Is that so?” Not exactly convinced, Yagari took a few steps closer to you and arched a brow. “Then why did you try to walk away from me earlier?”

Looking away from him, you began to ring at your hands. “I got nervous.” Your answer caused him to chuckle, why, you had no idea. Instantly flustered and annoyed with him, you locked your eyes on his and frowned. “W-what? Why are you laughing at me? I didn't say or do anything funny at all. Are you trying to make me mad or something?”

“Quiet.” Knowing you wouldn't be quiet unless he made you, Yagari placed a single finger on your lips. “I can't remember you ever being nervous about anything before. If I recall correctly, you don't usually give things enough thought to become nervous.”

“Yeah, well, I was feeling nervous tonight.” Though you were still feeling sheepish, you lifted your nose into the air and did your best to hide that fact. “I don't know why it's a big deal.”

“If you're stopping to give things more thought, this can mean only one thing.” You weren't sure of the dim light was playing tricks on you or not, but you could have sworn you saw a little glimmer in his pale blue eye. If you didn't know any better, you'd think that he was teasing you. “Either what I've been saying is finally getting through that thick skull of yours, or you've matured, at least slightly.”

“I don't know about all that. That sounds more like wishful thinking to me than anything.” Sure he was wrong on both counts, you laughed, brushing off what he'd said. “I'm pretty sure I'm not any more mature right now than I was last month. I think you've probably just gotten used to me.”

“Possibly.” He nodded. “Now, what did you need to talk to me about? It must have been important if you were willing to disobey me and ignore my warnings, again.”

“You're really not going to let that go, are you?” Dropping your head to your chest, you let out a loud sigh. “Fine, be like that.” Almost embarrassed to tell him what it was you wanted to say, you let the words blurt out before you could think to take them back. “I wanted to thank you. It probably wasn't easy for you to trust me not to tell other people what I know, and it means a lot to me that you took that chance. I'm pretty careless and scatterbrained ninety percent of the time, so you taking that chance was probably a bad idea to start with. You must have known that from the start. So, you not taking me to have my brain wiped means more to me than I really know how to explain.” Hardly breathing through your entire speech, you filled your lungs with air and held it there. “Again, thanks.” Positive that you had to be blushing, you quickly glanced up at him, then back down to the floor several times. “Honestly, I'm not even sure why you were willing to trust me. I wouldn't have trusted me.”

Yagari was completely silent for several long seconds. He just stood there, staring at you with an unreadable expression. After a moment, he pulled a cigarette from his coat pocket and used the flickering candle to light it. Sitting down on an old, creaky chair, he placed his lips around the cigarette and inhaled. “I'm not sure either.”

“Whoa, wait just a second. You all me careless, and you did something like that without reason?” Hardly able to believe your own ears, you stomped over to him and placed your hands on his shoulders. “Come on, you can't be serious. There has to be a reason. If there's not, you're even worse than I am about not thinking things through.”

Feeling no need to defend himself, Yagari's answer came quickly. “I felt I could trust you.”

“That's it? You just, went by your gut feeling?” A bit underwhelmed by his answer, you dropped to his lap and shook your head. “That's both anticlimactic and dangerous. I expected something way deeper and more meaningful than that from you.”

Ignoring your words, Yagari looked down at you and lowered his lids, showing obvious annoyance. “Why are you sitting on me?”

“Because I feel like it.” Grinning in a proud, slightly sarcastic way, you made yourself comfortable on his lap, refusing to get up. “I'm just taking my inspiration from you and doing what I feel like doing, right when I feel like doing it.”

Not at all amused with your actions, he shook his head. “There's a difference between doing what you feel like doing, and doing something because you feel it's the right thing to do.” Serious, as always, Yagari locked eyes with you. Despite his seriousness, there was an underlying tone to his look that made you blush. “It would do you well to learn the difference, and soon.”

“I think you're making excuses for yourself, but I'm not going to open up that can of worms.” Draping an arm around his shoulders, you tilted your chin up and placed a very unexpected kiss directly on his lips. The moment you realized what you'd done, you pulled away and placed your burning face in your hands. “O-okay, I'm really not sure why I did that, at all. I'm sorry.”

Placing his hand on your back, Yagari gave you a single, firm pat. “Thank you.”

“F-for what?” Curious as to what he could possibly be thanking you for, you awkwardly peeked at him from between your fingers.“Kissing you?”

“No.” Smirking down at you, just barely enough to be noticeable, he slowly shook his head from side to side. “For proving my point better than I ever could have.”
