Two weeks exactly had passed since Vergil had agreed to teach you how to protect yourself better when exploring on your own. Your small injury had fully healed, and the two of you now stood in a large field, far outside the city limits. Vergil had gathered an array of different weapons, ranging from a simple slingshot, to what you were almost positive was a flamethrower. For the last fifteen minutes at least, you'd carefully looked over and tried out each weapon that interested you. No matter how many different weapons you tried out, you couldn't decide which one was for you. As calm and laid back as Vergil was getting bored with the wait. “Hurry and make your decision, before I make the decision for you.”

“I'm trying. Don't shove me into things. This is an important decision.” Picking up a small handgun, for the third time now, you aimed at a small target he'd set up earlier and tried to imagine yourself using it. Just like the last time you picked it up, it didn't feel at all right in your hands.

“You're right, and you've had the last two weeks to think about it.” Keeping his tone perfectly even, Vergil looked down at you in a stern, almost commanding sort of way. The look wasn't cruel, but it was certainly enough to kick you into high gear. “I'm taking my time to teach you how to better protect yourself, the least you could have done was come prepared.”

“Point taken.” Putting the gun back in its place, you quickly looked over everything one last time. It was unfortunate, but nothing caught your eye or piqued your interest. “You use a sword, so I guess I'll go with that. If I don't feel it's right using that, I can always switch over to something else, right?” Slightly desperate to get things going, Vergil nodded. “Okay, then let's start out with a good, old fashioned sword and see what happens.”

Glad you'd finally made some sort of decision, Vergil nodded again. “I would go with something light if I were you. Your strength doesn't lie in your muscle.” Though his words made it sound like you had a choice, he quickly picked out a sword he thought would be fitting for your body type, combat style, and skill level. He'd managed to do this so quickly, it was as if he'd actually picked out the blade long ago. “How does it feel?”

Unsure how it was supposed to feel, you messily swung the blade vertically, then again, this time horizontally. Much to your surprise, and delight, it felt perfectly comfortable. Unlike some of the other swords you'd tried out this morning, it wasn't too long, short, heavy, or light for you to wield. “Actually, it feels pretty natural. I think this just might work.”

“Good.” More than ready for your lesson to begin, Vergil drew his sword from its sheath and without warning, sliced the blade through the air. He'd done this so quickly, a high pitched, hissing, echoed through your ears. When the blade stopped, it was less than a centimeter away from your cheek.

You were so surprised by his actions, it took you a couple of seconds to realize how much danger you'd been in. Had you sneezed, coughed or even flinched, he would have hit you.“W-what kind of lesson is that?”

“Lesson one, be vigilant. The enemy won't warn you before they attack.” Quickly pulling the blade away from your skin, he spun around on the balls of his feet and once again whirled his blade through the air. Vergil brought his movements to a halt just before he hit your cheek, this time however, he was on your opposite side. He'd moved so quickly, and gracefully, it was like a dance. “Lesson two, say on your toes. If you get too comfortable in one spot, you'll never be able to move in time.”

“I'm not trying to complain or anything, but are you sure this is the best teaching method? It seems a little over the top and dangerous to me.” The problem wasn't that you didn't  trust him, it was simply that you didn't trust the situation. Vergil was an excellent swordsman, but even the best swordsman in the world could mess up. In this case, the slightest miscalculation could be fatal for you. “I could probably learn more just by watching you fight someone than this will teach me.”

Ignoring your concerns completely, Vergil took several long strides away from you without taking his eyes off of you even once. You had no idea what was about to happen, but you could tell it wasn't good. As he narrowed his eyes, he took his sword in both hands and slowly brought it up so that the was even with his chest. Yet again, without warning, he dashed towards with blinding speed. Due to the bright sun reflecting off of this blade, you were unable to see his movements until it was too late. Vergil sliced through the air diagonally this time, cutting through several loose strands of your hair as he did. Despite how much power it had taken to slice through your hair the way he had, he was able to bring the sword to a complete stop less than a full second later. The tip of the sword was just barely pressed against your throat, just below your jawline. There was no blood, no pain, just the slightest bit of pressure. “Lesson three, pick a course of action, and see it through.”

Heart racing faster than you thought possible, you dropped to your knees and tried to catch your breath. You hadn't been harmed in any way, but the near death experiences were getting to you. Glaring up at him, you gripped your shirt tightly in your hand and spoke in a forceful, agitated tone. “Are you insane, or are you actually trying to kill me?”

Smirking wryly, almost as if he was enjoying this, Vergil silently lifted his sword into the air one last time. Clutching to the hilt, he raised his hands over his head and drove the sword straight down. He'd used such force to drive the sword down, that when it hit the ground between your knees, it buried itself almost all the way to the guard. Taking a single step away from you, and the sword, Vergil crossed his arms and snorted. “Lesson four, strike when your enemy is at their most vulnerable. Show no mercy, or you'll end up dead.”

Visibly shaking, you looked up at him with wide eyes. Though all apparent danger was gone, your heart was still beating so fast, and so hard, you thought it might work its way through your chest and onto your lap. “What the heck, is wrong with you?”

As if you'd said nothing at all, Vergil took a step towards where you were still kneeling and looked down at you with a pleased expression resting on his face. “Once you understand these basic lessons, we can move on.”

“Basic? What the heck do you mean, basic?” Filled with emotions ranging from amazement to anger, your words came out more like screeching. “I'm not even sure you know the meaning of that word. Seriously, that was anything but, basic." Sighing deeply, you attempted to regain your composure and calm down. "I've never come so close to dying that many times in the same day.”

Slowly shaking his head, Vergil offered you his hand and helped you to your feet. Once you were standing, he pulled his sword from the ground and began cleaning it off. “I assure you, you were never in any danger of dying.”

“Well, yeah, I guess that's true. But it certainly felt like I was.” Inwardly, you'd known you were safe. But what you knew to be true, and what your mind was telling you were two very different things. “I guess I just wasn't expecting this to be so, intense.”

Arching a thin brow at your words, he placed his sword back in its sheath. “Did you actually expect me to go easy on you? Your enemies won't give you that courtesy.”

“I didn't expect you to go easy on me, no. I did think you would move through my lessons a bit slower though, at least at first.” No longer even slightly angry with him, you let a quiet chuckle escape your throat. “I mean, we spent all that time picking out a weapon for me to fight with, and I didn't even get a chance to use it. Heck, I'm still not even sure if I was holding that sword right. Maybe we should start with the super basics or something.”

Scoffing at your suggestion, Vergil crossed his arms once more. “I don't have time for that. I said I would teach you, I never promised it would be easy, or that you would like my methods. You're welcome to stop your training here and now if it's too much for you to handle, Princess.”

“Hey, I didn't say that at all. And don't call me a princess.” The sound of that horrible pet-name ringing through your ears was enough to make you want to spit. Vergil used it for no other reason than to annoy you, and it almost always worked. More than just that, however, it reminded you how helpless you tended to be in dangerous situations and why you needed these lessons in the first place. “I'm going to keep training with you until I know what I'm doing and can do it well. I'll just make sure to bring a first aid kit along next time.”

Amused that you thought a wound inflicted by him could be patched up with a simple bandage, the corner of his mouth twitched upwards, creating the smallest hint of a smile. “If I were to miss, a first aid kit will do little to help the situation.”

“Oh, I know. If you were to miss, I'm pretty sure I would die instantly.” You laughed again. “The first aid kit is for you.”
