“Dad's going to be really happy when he sees this, and even happier when he tastes it. It smells so good I can hardly wait for him to get home so we can eat it.” Pressing her hands together, Nanako happily swayed from side to side. “You must be a really great cook.”

“Thank you, but I don't think my cooking is anything special. If we're lucky, it'll end up tasting just a little bit better than edible.” Not terribly confident in your own abilities in the kitchen, you pressed your brows together and smiled wryly. Honestly, you weren't sure how she had even managed to talk you into cooking, but it was too late for you to start worrying about that now.“Maybe you should give it a taste before your dad gets here. I wouldn't want anyone to get sick.”

“Okay!” Excited, despite the illusion of danger you tried to create, Nanako pressed her fork into the casserole, and without any hesitation, gave your concoction a taste. After swallowing, she placed her fork back on the countertop and nodded happily. “It tastes good to me. Really, really good actually.”

Feeling a little less worried now that someone else had tasted it, you released a relieved sigh. “I really hope you're not just saying that to make me feel better.”

Before Nanako had a chance to deny anything at all, the front door opened and Dojima stepped inside and announced himself. “Nanako, I'm home.” As he stepped into the kitchen, with Adachi following close behind, you could tell that he was obviously surprised to see you standing there.

“Welcome home dad.”Quickly leaving your side, Nanako rushed up to Dojima and tightly wrapped her arms around his legs. “Guess who cooked us dinner? I'll give you a little hint, just in case you can't figure it out. It wasn't me.”

“I guess that means she roped you into doing it, right?” Looking almost guilty, Dojima rubbed the back of his head and sighed deeply. “Sorry if she bothered you. You didn't have to do that, you know.”

“It's okay, I really don't mind. I'd have had to make dinner for myself anyway, and she doesn't bother me at all, ever.” Embarrassed by his unnecessary apology, you waved off his concerns as quickly as you could. “You all have had me over to dinner a couple of times now, so this is the least I can do to thank you both. I just hope everything tastes okay.”

“You see dad, I knew she wouldn't mind.” Releasing him from her embrace, Nanako took his hand in hers and tugged him towards the table.“ Now come on, let's eat already. I'm starving.” Not about to take no for an answer, she led Dojima and Adachi to the table and excitedly helped you serve the food you had prepared for everyone. Once everyone had a plate, she sat down beside you, smiling from ear to ear. “This is really nice. It's like we're all one big family, minus big bro of course. Even Adachi kind of fits in.”

“Hey, thanks Nanako.” Already busy stuffing his face, Adachi swallowed, the screwed up his face, making his confusion more than obvious. “I think.”

Shaking his head at Adachi, Dojima sighed, then awkwardly turned his attention to you. “Thanks for keeping Nanako occupied. You've been doing it more and more lately, and having you around always seems to make her happy.” As he spoke, am all too noticeable look of sadness passed over his face. “She's alone a lot more than I'd like to admit, so I really do appreciate you keeping her company from time to time.”

“Don't mention it.” Though you'd already told him not to worry about it, Dojima still seemed to be feeling guilty. You weren't sure how, exactly you could assure him that Nanako wasn't bothering you, or that you actually liked the companionship, but you were going to try. After all, you certainly didn't want Nanako getting into trouble after you left. “I don't like being alone all that much either. And since I live alone, this is actually really nice. ”

“Oh, well, that's good.” At a slight loss for words, Dojima simply nodded. “This is really tasty by the way. I'll be honest with you, I was afraid you'd cook as bad as Yu's female friends do.” You'd never tasted any of their food before, but you knew it had to be bad, because the very thought made Dojima frown. “I don't think I've ever been so sick in all my life.”

Glancing from you, then to Dojima, and back to you, Adachi began to smile. “Boy, you two sure are awkward this evening. It's kind of painful just sitting here watching, you know?” Now finished with his plate of food, he leaned away from the table and started to chuckle. “This is pretty unlike you, boss, is everything alright?”

Though both angry, and embarrassed, Dojima decided to only show one of those emotions. Anger. Hiding his discomfort amazingly well, he coldly stared down at Adachi and narrowed his eyes. Had the two of them been sitting any closer, you were sure Dojima would have smacked him. “Shut up Adachi.”

“My bad, sorry boss.” Shrinking back due to Dojima's glare, Adachi released an embarrassed laugh. “I'm just asking, geez. No reason to get all upset like that. You're going to scare someone with that temper of yours.”

Actually sympathizing with Adachi, you couldn't help but back him up. Speaking in an obviously playful tone, you reprimanded him. “Yeah, Dojima, calm down. It was just a little joke.”

Instead of getting upset or offended, Dojima actually started to grin. With a nod, he stood up from his seat and stepped into the small, homey kitchen. “I'll make us some coffee.” Despite the short dispute, the remainder of the evening was pleasant and enjoyable. Adachi and Nanako both teased you and Dojima throughout the night, which never failed to make at least one of you uncomfortable, but that, for the most part, was easily ignored.

While sitting on the couch, having a long conversation with Dojima about nothing at all, you noticed that Nanako was starting to nod off. This made you realize just how late it had gotten without you noticing it. Surprise that so much time had passed so quickly, your cheeks began to grow red. “I think it's probably time I get going. It's getting late and I don't want to keep anyone up.”

“Hmm?” Unaware of how late it had gotten, Dojima glanced at the clock and blinked several times in disbelief. “It has gotten late, hasn't it? You're not keeping me up, but I don't want you walking home alone after nightfall. With everything that's been going on, it isn't safe.” Standing from his place beside you, he took your now empty mug and placed it in the sink. “Thanks again, for coming over and all. We enjoyed having you here.”

Before you could respond, a very sleepy Nanako scrambled off of the floor and clutched to the side of Dojima's pants. “She can't leave yet, you've got to give her a good-night kiss.” Tugging on his pants desperately, she began to plea. “That's what happens in all those old movies you watch when I go to sleep. You know, the ones without any color?”

With a shake of his head, Dojima gently quieted her. “No Nanako, that's enough.”

Looking terribly disappointed and even a little bit sad, she hung her head low and sulked in an all too pathetic way. As pathetic as she looked, she didn't try to argue with him. “R-right, sorry dad.”

Though you didn't want to disagree with Dojima, you hated to see Nanako so sad. And honestly, what was one little kiss going to hurt? “She's right though, you know. That is how things happen in the movies. I've seen a couple of them myself, so I speak from experience.”

Taking what you'd said as not only permission, but as a sign that you actually agreed with Nanako, Dojima dropped his shoulders and shook his head. “There you two go, ganging up on me again.” Having lost his resolve, he looked down at his hopeful little girl and sighed quietly. “I've really got to learn to say no to you before you're too much older.” Still not sure if he should be doing this or not, he stood in front of you and stiffly leaned in to kiss your cheek. The moment he did so, Nanako rushed upstairs, giggling happily to herself.

“Oh, would you look at that. It looks like someone's gone and gotten himself a girlfriend. Who'd have guessed?” Also chuckling, Adachi stepped closer to Dojima and gave his shoulder a firm pat. “I didn't know you had it in you. I'm proud of you boss.”

Already embarrassed and sure he couldn't muster up a decent glare, Dojima loosely shut his eyes and mumbled under his breath. “Shut up Adachi.”
