“Man, could it be any hotter?” Pulling at the collar of your school uniform you tried your best to cool yourself down. School had ended early today, meaning you had no choice but to walk home with the sun directly overhead. “I swear it gets warmer every year. I should have brought an umbrella to block the sun or something. I'm going to melt out here.” As you continued on your way, doing what you could to keep to the shadows, you heard the pitter-patter of hurried footsteps behind you. “Hm?” Before you could even turn around, you felt something cold and damp touch the back of your hand. There, standing beside you with bright, excited eyes was Koromaru. “Hey Koromaru. What are you doing here?” Happy for the company, you knelt down and gently stroked him below the chin, “If you're here, that must mean that Ken is nearby, right?”

No sooner had you said his name than you heard Ken calling out to you. “Sorry if Koromaru scared you. He took off running as soon as he saw you and I couldn't stop him.”

With a shake of your head, you dismissed his worries. Koromaru was anything but scary, and he always seemed happy to see you. “He didn't scare me. Who could be afraid of such a sweet dog?”

“I don't know. But I'm sure someone is.” As you rose to your feet, you noticed that Ken seemed a little uncomfortable. You weren't sure what was bothering him, but Koromaru must have noticed it too, because he had started nuzzling at Ken's hand. He mumbled something to Koromaru, but he had said it so quietly, you hadn't been able to make it out. After giving Koromaru a nod, Ken looked up at you with a determined expression. “So are you doing anything today?” You assumed he must have been nervous about asking you for some reason, because he had half yelled his question.

“Other than trying to avoid this heat?” Chuckling weakly, you shook your head. “Nope, nothing at all. Why? Did you want to hang out?”

Ken's face quickly started to turn red. Though you weren't sure if it was do to the sun beating down on him, or embarrassment. You figured it was the latter, but had no idea what he might be embarrassed about. “If you're not busy, and you wanted to, I thought maybe we could.”

“Sure.” You nodded. “What's the plan then?”

“The plan?” Ken's expression went blank. “U-um, I didn't actually make one. I didn't think you would say yes.”

“Then let's just go somewhere cool until we come up with one.” Taking his hand in yours, you tugged him towards the nearest shopping center. Once you got there, you were sure one of you would come up with something. A short walk later, you stepped inside the cool shopping center and let out a sigh of relief. The large, mall like building was almost completely empty, making it that much easier for the two of you to enjoy. “So, have you though of anything yet?”

“Oh, right.” Having already forgotten that he was supposed to be coming up with a plan, Ken looked around for something to do. As he searched, Koromaru ran off and sat down in front of an ice cream parlor. “Why don't we get some ice cream?”

“Sounds good to me.” Honestly indifferent about what the two of you did, you agreed. “Anything to help with this heat is a good idea in my book.” Lacing his fingers with yours once more, you walked with him to the shop. Ken seemed to be growing more and more nervous the longer he spent with you. He was actually so nervous, you ended up ordering his ice cream for him. This was because every time he tried to speak, Ken just ended up mixing up the words and stuttering.  He did however, manage to pay on his own. “You didn't have to pay for me you know.”

“Yes I did.” Puffing out his chest, Ken put on the most serious face he could. Unfortunately for him, his attempt to be serious had only succeeded in making him look adorable. “I asked you out, so it's my responsibility.”

“Asked me out?” As you took a seat across from him at one of the nearby high-top tables, you tried not to smirk. The last thing Ken needed right now was for you to start teasing him. You knew this, and you knew this well. Even so, you couldn't stop yourself. His blush was just too cute to pass up. “So you mean this is a date?”

Your question was almost enough to make Ken choke on his ice cream. “W-well, um.”

“I'm only teasing you Ken. No need to get all embarrassed about it.” Giggling softly you apologized. “I'm sorry, I'll try not to do it again.”

“Oh, right.” With no real way to hide his flushed cheeks, Ken simply lowered his head and focused on his ice cream. “It's okay.”

As you offered a tiny spoon of your frozen treat to Koromaru, you cleared your throat. “If you did want this to be a date though, that would be totally fine with me too.”

Eyes wide and face painfully red, Ken opened his mouth to speak. Before he could say a single word, his phone started to ring. Afraid the call might be important, he looked down at the phone. The second he saw who was calling him, Ken started to frown. “Sorry, I should probably answer this.” Quickly rushing away, so that you couldn't hear his conversation, he answered.

“I guess it's just you and me now, huh Koromaru?” Koromaru placed a paw on your lap and barked in agreement

Barely a minute after he'd walked away, Ken returned. “Sorry, it looks like I've got to head back to the dorms.” Ken was trying not to look disappointed, but the truth was written all over his face. “I can still walk you home though, if you want.”

“That's okay. We can always hang out another time.” While you would have liked to spend more time with him, you managed to keep smiling. “Let's go.” Hoping down from your seat, you offered Ken your free hand. Blushing, he accepted and started towards your home. The walk home was mostly quiet, but that didn't mean that it wasn't enjoyable. Just being with Ken was fun, and what made it even better was how flustered he got each and every time the two of you passed someone on the street. You had offered to stop holding his hand, thinking it might lessen his embarrassment, but he refused.

It wasn't until your house finally came into view that he released your hand. “So, I was thinking, since we really didn't get to hang out very much today, maybe we could go to the movies together.” Looking to the ground, Ken awkwardly shuffled his feet from side to side. “There's one coming out soon that I really want to see.”

“It's not that new Featherman R. movie is it?” Afraid you might not want to go see such a childish movie. he nodded slowly. “Then count me in! I've been waiting months for it to come out.”

“Seriously?” Ken's face lit up as soon as your words reached his ears. “I didn't think you want to go see that with me. I thought for sure only little kids watched that sort of stuff.” Hardly able to contain his excitement, he started grinning so wide you thought his face might crack. “If you're serious, we can go opening day. I'll get the tickets as soon as I can.”

“That sounds perfect I'll buy all the snacks and drinks, so you don't need to worry about that.” Knowing he had to go, even though you didn't want him to, you rose onto your tip toes and kissed his cheek before bidding him farewell. “I'll see you soon then.”

Completely stunned by the kiss, Ken stood there, unmoving until Koromaru barked. Jolted back to reality, he bowed at the waist then quickly turned around. “B-bye. See you soon. I'll call you sometime!” Leaving you and Koromaru behind, he took off running and didn't look back.

“You think I overdid it?” Laughing quietly to yourself, you looked to Koromaru for answers. Koromaru responded to your question by tilting his head to the side and wagging his tail. Smiling at his confused expression, you rubbed behind his ear before starting up the stairs to your house. “I'll just take that as a no.”
