The past months had been hard and stressful. There were many, many days where you wanted nothing more than to turn in your title and lay in bed until your body became one with the cushions. Of course this was an impossibility, and you knew it. When you took your oath to protect the kingdom, you'd taken it seriously. For that reason and that reason alone, you forced yourself out of bed and placed your tired feet on the cold hardwood floor. You splashed your face with cool water and quickly pulled your hair back, holding it tightly in place with a small strap of leather. Your uniform now dawned, you stepped out of your room and prepared to make your rounds.

Standing just outside your room was Marth, a gentle smile on his fresh, but still sleepy face. “Good morning, you're well rested I hope.”

“Yes, as well rested as can be expected My Lord. I do so wish I could strangle that rooster at times though.” You yawned, still trying to fully awaken yourself. “He doesn't seem to know the difference between the rising sun, and a lit candle.”

“Unfortunately,  there's not much that can be done when it comes to that rooster. And I do believe I've asked you to stop being so very formal with me.” He sighed. “You've never addressed me this way in the past, I see no need for you to start now.”

“Last I checked, you were rather concerned with certain falsehoods going around the castle. Is this no longer a problem?” Try as you might, you couldn't keep yourself from smirking. What he said not only surprised you, it wiped the smirk right off of your face.

“No, I don't believe they are a problem at all, not anymore.” Acting as if his words shouldn't have been a surprise to you, he continued speaking in a calm , nonchalant manner. “If you have a bit of free time later, I'd like to speak with you in private. You know where you can find me.” With a strangely expressionless face, Marth turned away from you and walked in the direction of his study.

“That was odd. I wonder if he's feeling well.” Having no choice but to carry on, you shrug off your suspicious, and resumed making your rounds. Time seemed to go by particularly slowly today, perhaps it was your curiosity causing this. Unable to stand it any longer, you rushed through the rest of the castle, sending a few of the soldiers to check on things just in case you'd missed something in your haste and promptly made your way to Marth's door. “Finally.” You gently rapped on the heavy wooden door and awaited his response.

“Come in.” Marth raised his eyebrows upon seeing you. “Well, you finished up rather early this morning didn't you? Three hours, that's a new record isn't it?”

“I did finish a little sooner than usual. But I assure you, everything is how it should be.” You took a few steps into the room, closing the door once clear. “Now, you wanted to see me?”

“Yes, please, have a seat.” Marth motioned a nearby chair and cleared his throat. “I am aware that this is not the usual way to do things, however I believe it is the best way.” For a long time, nothing was said at all. When Marth did speak, he sounded nervous and unsure of himself. “I hope it isn't just me that feels this way, but I feel our relationship has changed slightly as of late.” Once again the room filled with silence. He stared at you as if waiting for you to respond.

“In truth, you and I have known each other since birth. I've noticed no sudden change in our relationship. We are just as close as we've ever been, and have certainly not grown apart.” Worried that he may want to remove you from your position, you sat on the edge of your seat, nervously wringing your hands. “Have I done something to upset you My Lord?”

“No, not at all.” Standing from his chair as if he'd sat on a tack, Marth rushed to you, taking your clammy hands into his. “As a matter of fact, you've been doing quite the opposite for a very long while now.” He knelt in front of you and brought your fingers to his lips, gently kissing them. “Everyday I see you, my life becomes a bit more complete. And while I have enjoyed having you stand by my side as my captain, there is nothing that would bring me more joy than if you were to stand beside me as my wife and queen.”

Your mouth dropped open so quickly, you thought your jaw may be on the ground. “M-Marth, why the sudden decision? It's not like you. You haven't even courted me at all.” You didn't know why you were making excuses, the idea made you completely ecstatic.

“If you aren't interested I understand. You are wonderful at your job, and I can imagine it would be more than difficult for you to change your way of life now.” Disappointment was obvious on his blushing face. “Though, I do ask that you at least think about it. You don't have to m-. ”

You stopped him mid sentence. “No.”

Marth flinched. “That was fast. My apologies, I was out of line.” Looking absolutely devastated, he slowly began standing to his feet, only to have you pull him back down.

“You misunderstand. No wasn't an answer, it was my response to needing to think. I need no time to decide, I would be honored to help you rule  your kingdom. Actually, honored doesn't even begin to describe how I feel.”

“You can use whatever words you like, as long as you accept.” He dug in his pocket and pulled out a very old, very elegant ring. “As I'm sure you’ve guessed, this is an heirloom. It may be a bit out of fashion now, so if you'd like another-.”

“No, it's absolutely perfect.” Once the ring was placed snugly on your finger, you pulled Marth into a tight, emotional hug.

Marth returned your hug one hundred fold. “If you're completely sure it's to your liking.” He placed a very soft kiss on your lips, lifted you out of the chair and sat back down with you on his lap, never once letting you go.

“I'm sure.” You didn't even try to keep your composure, you let your kisses fall where they may as you continued holding him tight.

“I do however have one, rather large request. You see, I was not completely honest with you before when I said the circulating rumors were no longer a concern to me. As I'm sure you've guessed, they still bother me.” With a weak smile he moved your loose hair behind your ear. “So what I'm asking is for you to keep our engagement secret for a while.” He smirked. “I wouldn't want everyone thinking they were right all along.

You chuckled. "I expected nothing less from you. And I'm not making any promises, but I will do my best to not to let it slip out. It's going to be hard on me though.”

He kissed you again, his voice laced in pure joy. “It shall be hard for me as well.”
