Another dreadfully boring day came and went without the slightest hint of excitement. The heart-pounding days of missions, fighting and near death experience were far in your past and would likely never be seen again. This, of course, wasn't because you wanted those days gone, but because you had no choice but to leave them behind. At first you didn't mind too terribly, it was actually nice being allowed to relax. After a month or so of being idle, however, you began to suspect your worth was dwindling. Though Orochimaru never said anything about you being a burden, you couldn't help but feel that way. You couldn't even remember the last time you did something truly helpful, and that bothered you quite a lot.

With these thoughts repeating in your mind, over and over again, you pushed yourself out of bed and walked around the hideout feeling depressed, conflicted and angry. “Maybe it would be better if I just left. I'm not doing any good being here anyway.” You roughly ran your fingers through your hair and sighed. “I bet he wouldn't even notice that I'd left, and I'm sure Kabuto would be happy to see me leave.” Standing at the large open mouth of the cave, you breathed in the cold night air causing a shiver to run through your body, then firmly nodded to yourself. “That's what I'll do. It's for the best.”

“It would have been nice if you let me know that you were planning to leave me.” Orochimaru's gruff voice echoed in your ears as he slowly walked up behind you. The sound of his quiet footsteps caused your breath to become shallow. “Don't let me stop you from leaving, but tell me before you go, do you know where you're going? You're a rogue ninja now. Not many places will accept you as I have.”

With your eyes shut loosely, you turned around to face him. Now that he knew your intentions, it was going to be much harder for you to continue on with your plan, even if he really didn't want you to stay. “How long have you been there?”

Orochimaru stepped out of the darkness into the bright light of the full moon with his head held high and his bright eyes focused on you. The look on his face was stern to the point of looking angry. “Far long enough. Now answer me before I get upset.”

Knowing him the way you did, he'd probably heard everything you'd said and didn't need your explanation. Despite this, you offered him one simply out of respect. “I don't know where I'm going, actually. I hadn't really planned anything out.” Saying it allowed made you feel terribly stupid an inept, but you continued. “I can't fight anymore, so It's not like I'm dangerous. Maybe if that's understood, I'll be able to find a place that will accept me.” Being humble was difficult for you, but in this situation, you had little choice.

“I see.” He nodded, now void of any obvious emotions. “Before you go, I need to remind you of something. In the last battle you fought, you promised me your undying loyalty. You were near death, and this promise was the only reason I didn't let Kabuto finish you.” A wicked smirk spread across his pale face as he stepped closer to you. “So tell me, if you leave me now, breaking your promise, what makes you think that I too won't change my mind?”

He had a point, and a very scary one at that. If Orochimaru wanted you dead, there was nothing in the word you could do to stop him. Just the thought made you second guess yourself, but you remained firm in your decision, at least outwardly. “I'm  not leaving because I want to go. I'm leaving because I'm of no use to you here. I don't do anything at all anymore. I'm only a burden, and I don't want to burden you.”

Orochimaru let out a low, sinister chuckle. “That gives me absolutely no reason at all why I shouldn't dispose of you, should you choose leave.” His tongue flicked out of his mouth like an angry serpent as he grew uncomfortably close to you. “You're of no use to me if you're gone either. If you're not right here by my side, what good could you possibly be to me?”

“So you admit that I'm not doing anything worth while?” You turned your face away from him, laughing bitterly. “It's good to know I can always count on you to be straight with me. You never sugar coat anything and I always know exactly how you feel about something.”

“Actually, I don't think you know how I perceive things at all.” He pressed his cold hand to your cheek. “I've told you before, if I wanted you gone, you'd be dead. I'd have killed you without the slightest bit of hesitation of you were indeed a burden to me.” Orochimaru gently ran his thumb over your delicate, blushing skin. “You're still alive aren't you?”

Slightly taken back by his sudden kindness, you struggled to answer his simple, obvious question. “Yes, I'm alive. I am as far as I know anyway. If I'm going to be honest though, this does seem a little bit like a dream to me.”

“You're alive, and very much awake. Now stop walking around the halls sulking like a child. It doesn't suit you.” He dropped his hand away from you and smirked. “One doesn't need the ability to fight to be useful. There are plenty of other things you could be doing. Had I known you were feeling insignificant, I'd have given you something to do much sooner.” Glancing down to your stomach, Orochimaru grimaced at the memory that flooded his mind. “It pains me to say it, but I was in fact worried about you. As I've already stated, you were very near death that day. I feared that if I put you to work too soon, you might injure yourself further.”

His confession, while it made perfect sense, wasn't something you ever thought you'd hear from him. Nonetheless, knowing that he did in fact want you to stay overjoyed you. “I see.” You nodded, trying to keep yourself as calm as possible. “I think I'm about as healed up as I'll ever be, and I'm more than ready to get back to doing things.” With the deep, constricting depression you'd been battling for so long now finally lifted from your shoulders, you could actually smile again. “Just say the word My Lord and it will be done.”

“Is that so?” Glad that he'd talked you into staying, just as he always knew he would, Orochimaru raised a questioning brow. “You're not planning to leave then I presume? What a pity, Kabuto would have been so happy to assist me in your death.” He feigned a sigh. “I suppose I'll just have to find something else to occupy his time for now.”

“I'm sure he'd have been absolutely ecstatic, but I think I'll stick around and torture him a bit more before I go.” Too relieved to think clearly, you wrapped your arms around Orochimaru and snuggled your face into his chest. “I'm really glad you don't find me a burden. I really didn't want to have to leave you. You've been exceptionally kind and forgiving of me. You might have had Kabuto warp my mind and confuse my thoughts just so I'd join you, but I'm really glad you did.” With your face still buried in his chest, you started to blush. “I know this is going to sound really lame and cheesy, but at this point, I don't think I could live without you.”

Though he was slightly uncomfortable with your actions and your words, Orochimaru wrapped a single arm around you and weakly returned your hug. “I wouldn't go that far, but I will admit, that I have ground disconcertingly fond of you. This fact is quickly becoming more difficult for me to ignore. Hiding it, especially around certain people, is no easy task either.”

“You can be as fond of me as you like, I promise I won't tell a soul, unless I have a really good reason to.” In complete disbelief that he'd actually admit something like that to you, you looked up at him, smiling and blushing love a love struck school girl. “You know Sama, I think you might want to stay out of the full moon from now on. Especially around other people.”

“Oh, really?” Orochimaru looked down at you with an uncharacteristically tender look in his deep golden eyes. Confused by what you'd just said, and unwilling to give it enough thought to understand, he tilted his head slightly to the side and prompted you for an explanation. “And would you mind telling me, why exactly might that be?”

Grinning from ear to ear, you squeezed him tightly in your embrace. “Because, you're acting like a big pile of emotional mush, not a Legendary Sannin. If someone were to see you acting like this, I can't imagine they'd be very scared.”

“Sarcasm again.” He sighed. “I doubt very much that the moon has anything to do with that my dear.” Wrapping his other arm around you, he leaned down just enough to reach you and kissed the top of your head. “Now that you understand how I feel, and I you, you should heed this last warning.” As he placed his hand on your cheek, his expression suddenly became very serious and sullen. “If you ever try to leave me again, or even think of such things, I won't give Kabuto the pleasure of killing you. I'll do it myself.”
