“You look so pretty. It's just a shame we couldn't find you a pair of shoes to match.” Smiling like she'd waited a lifetime for this day to come, Mist brushed down your long white dress and added the finishing touches to your bouquet. “There, you look absolutely perfect. I wouldn't be even a little bit surprised if Volug passed out cold the minute he saw you.”

Being in the middle of a war mad already difficult, stressful things like weddings much harder than they needed to be. Even finding a dress was nearly impossible. You certainly didn't have the money, or time to go out and buy a new one. You had however been lucky enough to be given one by a very thankful seamstress whose village you'd helped protect. The dress was a little large in the shoulders, and the style wasn't one you would have chosen. Once it was on however, it actually suited you perfectly. Your bouquet wasn't filled with the expensive flowers you thought you wanted, it was made of wild flowers that Mist and Rolf had picked for you by hand. Though it was nothing you thought you wanted, this was somehow more special. Each item you wore, or held, had a special memory attached it, adding to the magic of your day.

“Don't start crying, you'll stain your dress.” Mist quickly dried your joyful tears.

“I didn't even notice I had started crying.” You laughed. “I guess I'm even happier than I thought I was. If that's possible.” Bringing yourself back to your senses, you took in a deep breath and peeked out of the tiny tent. “How much longer is it going to be? I don't think I can wait much longer.”

“Everything's already in place. It shouldn't be more than a few minutes.” The moment Mist stopped talking, you heard the Herons start to sing. “See, I told you it wouldn't be much longer. Are you scared?”

Surprisingly, you weren't at all nervous. You were far too excited to be nervous. “Actually, no. I'm just really happy. I was freaking out a lot earlier, but now I feel okay.”

The Herons song changed, giving you your cue. “Well good, because it's your turn to walk.” Mist gave you a little shove urging you out of the tent. “I'm warning you now, Volug looks really handsome, so try not to faint or squeal.”

The moment you stepped outside you caught sight of Volug. He did look handsome, but the sight of him wearing such formal clothes made it hard for you not to laugh. You walked up to where he was standing without the slightest bit of hesitation. Though there were people all around you, you didn't notice even one of them. You completely forgot that you were walking down an aisle made of ragged tents wearing a dress that was too large. As imperfect as the setting was, it was perfect in your mind. You wouldn't have changed a single thing. When you finally reached Volug, your words caught in your throat, you couldn't make a sound.

Thankfully, Rhys spoke up, ending the silence. “I apologize if I mess things up a bit, I've never done a wedding before.” He offered you both a smile as he opened a small, heavily worn book. Though the words were faded, he read them with ease. “Marriage is the beautiful blending of two lives, two loves, two hearts. It is the wonderful, mystical moment when a beautiful love story begins. Love fills the moments, and with these moments begins eternity. Love fills a lifetime, and a lifetime begins this hour.” Even as he spoke, Rhys began to tear up. “You'll forgive me, but I have to ask this. Is there anyone here, that doesn't see it fit, for these two to marry?”

After a few seconds of nerve racking silence, Tibarn stood up and spoke up in a loud voice. “Just get on with it. If someone has a problem with this, they can come talk to me. I'm pretty sure I can change their mind without too much trouble.”

You nodded. “Sounds like a good plan to me.”

“If you're sure.” Rhys teased. “Now, I believe you asked for the shortened versions of the vows.” He thumbed through the book, stopping about halfway through. “Here we are.” With a gentle smile, Rhys looked up at you and began. “Do you take this man, to be your wedded husband, from this day forward, for better, or for worse, in sickness and in health, as long as you both shall live?”

Finally your nervousness had caught up to you. Having a hard time even breathing, you nodded, swallowed hard and forced a squeaky answer from your throat. “Of course I do.”

With his smile growing wider by the second, Rhys nodded and turned his attention to Volug. “Do you Volug, take this woman, to be your wedded wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better or worse, in sickness and in health, as long as you both shall live?”

Volug nodded, answering in his beautiful native tongue. He gave your hands a little squeeze and said it again, this time in flawless Telius. “Yes, I do.

Rhys spoke quietly. “Do you have the rings?” As you turned to Mist for Volug's ring, Volug turned to Nailah for yours. Once the two of you were ready, Rhys continued. “Now, would you both please repeat after me? With this ring, I thee wed, and with all my worldly goods, I thee endow.” As you began repeating his words, you could feel yourself starting to cry. When the ring was placed on your finger, you could no longer hold back the tears. “By the power invested in me, I now pronounce you husband, and wife. You may now kiss your bride.”

Volug gently brushed away your tears and smiled. “I hope this is the last time I ever see you cry.” He held your face in his hands and slowly began to kiss you. As you wrapped your arms around his neck and leaned into him, you heard the large crowd of people start to cheer and clap. Just knowing so many people were watching the two of you kiss caused you to blush terribly. Volug quickly realized your embarrassment and ended the kiss. He immediately lifted you off of your feet and began to carry you down the isle. The crowd, having no rice to throw, threw everything from hats, to sand.

It wasn't until you were alone with Volug that you could breathe again. You snuggled him close and let out a long sigh. “You know, that was a lot more awkward than I thought it would be. I was okay until I got up there.”

More excited than he had words to express, Volug held you close and once again started to kiss you. “It wasn't so bad. You look beautiful.”

“Well thank you. I'm not exactly used to you dressing like that, but you do look very handsome.” You ran your fingers through his thick, messy hair and smiled up at him. “I think if I give it a little time, I could definitely get used to it.”

Volug smiled wearily and shook his head. “I couldn't. It's too hot.” His smile suddenly became whimsical. “There's something I haven't said to you yet today, and it's something very important.” He loosely draped his arms around your waist and lowered his forehead to yours. With his eyes locked on yours, he spoke in a very quiet, sincere voice. “I love you.”

Though you already knew how much he loved you, you couldn't help but blush each and every time he said it. With a stomach full of butterflies, and your heart racing, you laced your fingers behind his neck and kissed him. “I love you too Volug.” You pressed your lips against his again thankful to finally be alone.

Boyd banged on the framing of your tent and spoke in a loud, excited voice. “Hey, you lovebirds, I hate to interrupt whatever you're doing in there, but Oscar's got all the food ready. If you don't want to miss your own wedding dinner, you better hurry up.”

“You know, I don't mind getting married on the battle field, I actually thought it was kind of nice. But the lack of privacy we're going to have is going to be a little bothersome.” You sighed. “We might have to run away for a while.” Volug smiled down at you. If you didn't know better, you would have thought he'd taken you seriously. “Why are you looking at me like that? We can't actually run away. Where would we go?”

Volug released you and quickly produced two small sacks which were filled with enough food and clothing to last a week. “I already planned this. Come with me.” He grabbed your hand and quickly snuck away from the camp. Neither of you looked back even once, you just kept running.

Boyd, who had watched the two of you run off while in hiding, walked over to the rest of the camp and placed his hands on his hips. “Well everyone, it looks like the love birds have finally flown the coop.” Sitting down at his spot, he grinned. “About time too.” He sighed. “I was starving.”
