“Come on Cloud, please don't be so reclusive. There are a ton of people out there, dancing, drinking and having a good time. I really doubt anyone's going to be looking at you.” The last fifteen minutes of your night had been spent trying to get Cloud out of the men's bathroom. It was less than an hour until the New Year began and you were determined not to be in a washroom when the clock struck midnight. “You're being ridiculous you know.”

Cloud weakly shook his head. No amount of your begging was making a difference. “Go on without me. I'm sure Reno will dance with you.”

Almost at your breaking point, you brow began to twitch with frustration. “I don't want to dance with Reno, I want to dance with my boyfriend. Unfortunately, my darling boyfriend is acting like a spoiled four year old. Now stop moping around in the bathroom and dance with me or so help me, I will give you a swirly that you will never forget.” Refusing to take no for an answer, you grabbed him by the tie you'd forced him to wear and began dragging him from the bathroom.

“You don't need to be so rough. It's not like I'm going to be any fun anyway.” Clouds cheeks tinted pink as you drug him down the hallway and into the large, poorly decorated party room. “You can stop dragging me now, you're making a scene.”

“Oh, hush already, no one even noticed is yet.” You released his tie and quickly straightened out his suit. “You look really nice in a suit by the way. You should wear one more often.” Clearing your throat, you tried to regain your lost focus. “Now Cloud, since you're already out here with me, would you mind dancing a bit?”

Trying to tune out the loud chatter all around him, Cloud looked straight at you with a desperate, lost look in his eyes. “If I said no, would you listen, or would you get upset with me again?”

“Of course I would listen to you Cloud. I want you to be happy too you know.” You gently laced your fingers with his and smiled. “If you don't want to dance, we could go get some punch, or snack on the cheese tray. I just wanted you to be with me to bring in the New Year. It'll be our first New Year together, and I thought it would be kind of special. As long as we're not sitting in a bathroom, sulking together, we can do whatever you'd like.”

Feeling a little guilty for being so boring, Cloud gave a gentle nod. “I guess one dance wouldn't hurt. I should warn you though, my dancing skills might leave one, or both of us injured.” Smiling that smile you loved so much, he positioned his hands and slowly began to sway back and forth in time with the music. “This isn't so bad.”

Being this close to Cloud still made your heart race, and you hoped it always would. “I think it's kind of nice actually. We've really never done anything romantic together you know.”

Cloud's smile turned into an amused smirk. “You don't really seem like the romantic type. Had I known you were, I would have treated you much more delicately.” He dipped you down low, then brought you in extremely close to his body, causing your face to burst into a blush. “I'll make sure I don't treat you so roughly anymore. After all, I wouldn't want you to chip a nail.”

“I'm not saying I'm the romantic type, but I am a girl. Every girl I know likes to be treated like a princess every once and a while. Most of us still live out fairy tales in our minds.” You laughed nervously, then suddenly became very serious. “Also, you lied to me about not being able to dance. That was a cold move Cloud, I'll remember that.”

“I honestly didn't know I could dance, I'm making this up as I go along.” Though you didn't believe his claims, you didn't really see a reason to depute him. “By the way, I wanted to say this earlier, but you look really different dressed like that. It's a good kind of different though. I mean, you actually look like a girl. Not that you don't normally.” He sighed, knowing he'd made a complete mess out of what he was trying to say. “I like what you're wearing.”

The strange complement meant more to you than he'd ever know. Cloud seldom paid complements, so even when they were messy and awkward, they were special and beautiful to you. “Thank you Cloud. I think I've already said it, but you don't look so bad yourself.” Even though you knew it would embarrass him, you stood on your tiptoes and placed a gently kiss on his lips.

Just as you expected, his face turned a light pink colour. “Sometimes I think you only hang out with me because you like to watch me blush.”

“Well, I will admit, that is a pretty fun part of being around you.” No longer interested in dancing, you wrapped your arms around him and rested your cheek on his chest. “I think you might actually blush more than  most girls I know. Funny thing though, it seems to me, like I'm the only one who makes you blush. I'll have to learn to use these powers wisely.”

Cloud sighed quietly. “You're a real handful, you know that?” He looked away from you, suddenly very awkward and uncomfortable. “Would you mind, stepping outside with me? It's really hot and stuffy in here.” Just the way he spoke made it obvious that there was more to this than he was letting on. “Unless you didn't want to get some air. That's fine too.”

“Sure, I don't mind.” A little concerned for him, you placed your hand in his and followed him behind the Shinra building for some privacy. It was a little cold to be outside without a jacket, or even adequate sleeves, but if there was something bothering him, you wanted to be there. “What's the matter? You seem a little down.”

Slipping his hand out of yours, he walked a couple of steps away and stared down at the ground. “I had planned to be inside when I asked you this, so that everyone could hear.” He winced, not even trying to hide the fact that he was disappointed with himself. “I don't think I could make the words come out if I had an audience though.”

A strange rush of emotions flooded over you. You weren't even sure what emotions you were feeling. “I'm not really sure what you want me to say.”

He shook his head as he dug into his shallow suit pocket. “Here.” He tossed something very small in your direction. As dark as it was, it took you several seconds to realize what you were holding. “I know you said that girls like to be treated like princesses, and I'd do that for you if I knew how. Unfortunately, I don't. So you'll have to deal with clumsy, awkward me.” Blushing again, he looked back at you and smiled weakly. “If you want to deal with me that is.”

“I have to say Cloud, throwing me what looks like a wedding ring is definitely not romantic in any way. What if I had dropped it? Then where would we be?” Doing your best not to show just how happy you were, you walked up to him and placed the ring back in his hand. “You're supposed to get down on one knee, take my hands into yours, look me in my eyes like I'm the most precious thing in the world to you, and then, when the time is just right, you ask me in a soft, loving voice to marry you.”

Cloud swallowed hard and nodded slowly. “So, I'm guessing you'll probably be wanting me to do that now, right?”

“Well, it would be really nice if you did.” You smiled with a dreamy look in your eyes. “Of course, if you can't bring yourself to do it, I'll still marry you.”

Your last sentence temporarily muted him. “I see.” Very slowly and awkwardly, he lowered down to a kneeling position. As he tried to steady his breathing, you took your hands in his and looked up at you. The look in his eyes was nothing like you expected. You expected nervousness, reluctance, or even fear. Instead, he looked at you like you'd jokingly told him to, like you were the most precious thing in the world to him. He waited a moment, to make sure the time was right, just as instructed, and then, in a very soft, uncharacteristic voice, he spoke. “Would you please marry me.”

Dropping down to the ground, you threw your arms around his shoulders and nodded. “I don't know if I want to laugh or cry right now. I never thought you'd actually do something so sweet an embarrassing. And yes, yes I will marry you.” Unable to take it any longer, you roughly took his face in your hands and kissed him until neither of you could breathe. “I'll marry you tonight if you want me to.”

Cloud brought you back into a tight hug, holding you as close to him as possible. “I think we can wait a little while to do that. I can only take so much embarrassment in twenty-four hours. For now, we should probably get back to the party. We've only got about five minutes until the New Year's here.” He smirked wickedly. “And I want to make sure everyone here sees me share my New Years kiss with my new fiance.”
