You sat outside under a dim streetlight, hoping the warm breeze would help clear your head. Unfortunately, the street was filled with Shinra workers returning home after a long day. It was so noisy, you couldn't hear yourself think, let alone try to decider the strangely written words on the heavily worn pages in front of you. “I am never, ever, going to understand this stuff.”

“Are you still struggling? I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised. It took me years to unravel the mystery contained within those pages.” The very sound of Genesis's voice caused you to stiffen. Ever since he'd proposed to you, even if it was only in fun, you hadn't been able to look at him the same. Genesis walked directly in front of you and chuckled. “Does the very sight of me still fluster you that much?” He dropped down to one knee and gently lifted your chin, making your eyes level with his. “Surely my performance was not so very flawless.”

Turning your face away from his, you did your best to hide the quickly growing blush that threatened to overtake your body. “You're doing this on purpose Genesis. You know as well as I do that your little performance was more than just an act. You can deny it all you want, but no one kisses like that when they're acting.”

Genesis stood up without responding or even acknowledging  your claim. Quickly changing the subject altogether, he smiled in a rather sultry way and held his hand out for yours. “You'll never understand what's written there in a place like this. Come with me, I have a better place.”

Without giving it any thought, you took his hand and allowed him to lead you away from the busy street. “You know, anytime you take me somewhere, I end up completely lost. I'm beginning to think you do that on purpose, just so I can't run away from you.”

An almost offended look appeared on his face, but quickly faded into confusion. “I was unaware that you had thoughts of running away at all. Perhaps it's only in my dreams, but I thought, or hoped rather, that you enjoyed our time together.”

“I didn't say I didn't. I really do like being around you, but those people your fan club makes me want to run away sometimes.” The look on his face made you want to take back your words. “You know they've started following me when I go out? Some even try to ask me all these weird questions about you. It’s really creepy actually.”

Genesis nodded, but remained quiet until you were far outside the city limits. “I hope you aren't overly tired. I should have asked before we left. Trust me though, the walk is very worth it.”

“That's okay, I don't mind the walk.” You hadn't been walking long, and you weren't particularly tired, but being alone with Genesis was still very awkward. For this reason, you hoped wherever he was taking you wasn't too much farther. A few silent seconds later, you realized you were going up a small hill. Though it was too dark to see it, you could feel the difference in your ankles and calves.

It was now pitch black, and you couldn't even see your hand in front of your face. Luckily, you didn't have to struggle for long. “Hold onto me, and do be careful. The grass is a bit unkempt here, I wouldn't want you to harm yourself.” Genesis laced his fingers with yours to better his grip and slowed down to ensure you would trip or fall. “We're almost there now. Hopefully you'll find this place as peaceful, and wondrous as I do.”

The hill finally plateaued about a minute later. Now at the top, you could see why Genesis was so fond of this place. In one direction, you could see the entirety of Midgar, which from here, looked like nothing more than a little town. In the other direction, you saw thousands of bright, twinkling stars. “How did we get so high up? We were barely walking fifteen minutes.”

“That hill is much steeper than you realized apparently. The darkness must have played a slight trick on you, which explains why you handled it so well.” He chuckled. “If you ever come back here when the sun is shining, you'll understand.”

You didn't realize it, but the terrible awkwardness that had surrounded Genesis for so long was finally fading away. Things were still different than they were before, but now things was different in a good way. “Unless you bring me here, that won't even be possible. I don't even know how we got here.”

“Right you are.” Releasing your hand, Genesis stepped in front of you and placed his hands on your cheeks, giving you a very stern, but somehow gentle look. “I want to show you something else, but you must promise to keep it a secret, always.”

Something about how he was looking at you made your heart skip a beat. “O-okay, I promise.”

“Good.” His smile lit up his entire face. You didn't know what he was about to show you, but judging by how happy he was, it must be important. He pulled you threw grass that grew far passed your knees to a large, very old tree. It was too dark for you to see anything special about it though, so you thought it best to stay quiet and let him explain. “Do you think you could climb a rope ladder?”

Climbing a rope ladder in the dead of night didn't sound like a particularly good idea to you, but you didn't want to ruin Genesis's mood, so you agreed. “It's kind of dark, but I'm sure I could manage. You might just have to help me.”

“It would be my pleasure.” Bowing dramatically, Genesis helped you onto the creaking, swaying ladder. Once you'd gone far enough up, he climbed on behind you and helped your feet find the steps.  With his help, you made it to the top without too much trouble. “This is my secret. You're welcomed to come here whenever you like, but you mustn’t tell a soul about it.” He climbed in as soon as he possibly could and began feeling around the wooden floor until finding a small box of matches and an old gas lamp. “Here we are.”

Once the lamp was lit, light filled every inch of the small tree house. “This really is amazing. Did you build it yourself?”

Genesis laughed. “Of course not. Honestly, could you see me in the middle of nowhere, building a tree-house? People would think me a complete lunatic.” He sighed as he snuggled you in his arms. “Angeal built it, a long time ago actually. It's been a long time no doubt since he's been here though.”

“It's still in really good shape. You must come here often.” You subconsciously rested your head on his shoulder and returned his hug. “I see why you like it so much out here, it's quiet.”

“That is, one of the reasons. A larger one might be the memories this place holds.” You weren't sure if he was tired, or just filled with nostalgia. Either way, his voice had lowered to just above a whisper, his tone was calm and peaceful as if he was in the midst of a dream. “If you will permit me, there is one more thing I wish to share with you before the sun rises.”

Trying hard not to fall asleep, you gave a weak nod. “Sure, go ahead.”

“Ah, you are falling asleep.” He gently leaned back on the floor and allowed you to rest your head on his chest. “You may not remember this in the morning, but if I don't get this off of my chest, I may very well explode.”

With your eyes barely open, you nodded again. “I'll remember, I promise.”

The dim light was just bright enough for you to see his heartfelt smile. “If you insist.” He slowly closed his eyes and after a deep, calming breath, spoke. “I fear I may have fallen for my own act. You've become much more than a companion to me. You're special, in a way that I'm not sure how to describe. My thoughts are eternally of you, as if a spell has been cast over me.”

Too tired to stop yourself, you laughed. “Genesis, that's not a spell, it's a crush.” You squeezed him tighter. “But that's okay, I like you too.”

Genesis let out an amused snort. “I was attempting to romanticize it. But I suppose you're right.” Knowing you were now fast asleep, he let out a happy, little sigh and closed his eyes. “I have a crush on you.”
