The cool, damp grass tickled your bare feet as you sat down under the shade of a large old tree. The sun was just starting to go down and you could see the city far below start to light up like little fireflies is the distance. Though Yazoo could be absolutely terrifying and brutal towards anyone he deemed his enemy, he was incredibly sweet and protective over you. And while the two of you really couldn't go anywhere in public together, he never ceased to find things to do with you. “It's really pretty here, and I'm glad you brought me, but you know Kadaj is going to be really upset with you for taking me out again. He thinks I eat away way too much of your time as it is.”

Yazoo sat down next to you on the thin blanket he'd spread out just a moment earlier and chuckled. “Let him be upset. I can handle him.”

“I know you can, but believe it or not, I really don't like the idea of coming between the two of you.” Snuggling up close to Yazoo, you wrapped your arms around him and rested your head on his chest. “Your family really should come before me. Even if I do kind of like being the center of attention sometimes.”

“I give Kadaj and Loz plenty of my time, besides, Loz isn't jealous of the time I spend with you. Any time I'm with you, I'm not teasing him. Kadaj is only jealous that I have you in general. I honestly doubt he cares how much of my time I devote to him.” He draped his arm over your shoulders and quickly pulled your body into his arms. “Now if you don't mind, I'd like to stop talking about my dear brothers for a while. Since they aren't here, I see no reason to focus on them. For now, let's just relax and enjoy ourselves.”

You closed your eyes and happily relaxed against his chest. Just being with him, even if you weren't doing anything particularly special, brought a smile to your face. “That sounds like a pretty good plan to me.” Though neither of you were speaking, there was plenty of noise. Between the chirping crickets, clicking cicadas, and croaking frogs, there was never even a second of silence. These sounds might annoy some, but when all the bazaar sounds came together, you found them to be somehow, calming. It was as if the wildlife had come together just to play you their beautiful song, and you loved it.

Yazoo gently brushed your hair away from your face and smiled down at you. “Don't fall asleep on me now. I don't want to have to carry you back home, again.”

“That only happened once.” Much closer to falling asleep than you realized, you were actually glad he'd said something. Had he not, you'd have been fast asleep in a matter of minutes. “You say that, like it happens all the time.” Silent once more, you noticed something that disturbed you. It was actually silent. All the sounds had suddenly stopped. You didn't hear so much as a croak. Knowing that couldn't mean anything good, you sat up straight and clutched to Yazoo's sleeve. “Yazoo.”

His eyes were already focused directly on the entrance to the forest. “I know. Just stay close to me.” A deep red flooded from the forest entrance like blood gushing from a fresh wound. It moved so quickly, your eyes couldn't even follow liquid movements of whoever, or whatever this was. “This is going to be fun.” Smirking wickedly, as he often did before a fight, Yazoo stood to his feet, lifted you in his arms and helped you into the thick branched of the tree. “Don't move. I can take care of this.” He turned away from you and confidently walked towards the intruder. “Vincent Valentine. It's been quite a long time since we last saw each other, hasn't it?”

The red, flowing figure swirled around like a miniature tornado just over the ground, when it finally came to a halt, Vincent appeared with a stern look on his pale face. “I've come for the girl.”

“Have you?” He tilted his head in a cocky, sarcastic manner and laughed. “Well, if she wants to leave with you, she's more than welcome to. I'm not forcing her to stay with me after all. That would be terribly rude of me.” He turned his body slightly and gestured towards you. “She's over there, if you'd like to talk to her. I'm sure she won't mind having a little chat with you.”

Slowly stepping towards Yazoo with large, confident strides, Vincent scoffed.  “You expect me to believe she's staying with you of her own free will?”

Unaffected by Vincent's strong, sure attitude, or the fact that he had a large, deadly looking gun pointed straight at his head, Yazoo shrugged. “I said you can talk to her. If you don't believe me, she's right there. I'm sure she'd appreciate it if you put the gun away first though. As you see, I didn't bring any weapons with me, so your gun really isn't necessary.”

Vincent kept his crimson eyes fixed on Yazoo, ready to shoot in an instant if needed. As he stepped closer and closer to you, and Yazoo, he spoke in a low guttural sounding voice. “By now she's been brainwashed. Talking to her won't do any good.”

“Maybe she has, but she seems pretty happy to me.” With the end of Vincent's gun now firmly pressed against the center of his forehead, Yazoo smiled. “Before you kill me, I have a question for you. If you're so worried about her, why did it take you so long to find her? We've been in the same location this entire time, and I've seen you walking these forests dozens of times. Why is it that you chose to wait until now to rescue her?”

“I owe you no explanation.” Growing angry with Yazoo's laid back attitude, Vincent's trigger finger began to shake.

“No, but you do owe her one. If you'd come sooner, she probably wouldn't be brainwashed yet.” He sighed, feigning disappointment. “If I were you, I would apologize. She never would have known how happy she would be here with me if you hadn't taken your sweet time getting here. But I suppose it's too late for that.” Yazoo reached up and grabbed the barrel of the gun, pressing it even more firmly against him. “Go ahead.”

A long silence swept over the hill as the two of them stared dead into the others eyes. Not even the wind blew, it was as time itself had stopped completely. Your heart pounded in your chest like a ticking time bomb threatening to explode. Unable to stand it any longer, you jumped to the ground, stumbled to your feet and ran straight for Yazoo, pushing him down to the ground and away from the gun. “Please, I'll leave with you if you want, but don't hurt him. I know this sounds crazy, but I really do love him. You can think I'm brainwashed all you want, but I'm not. I know what I feel.”

Once again, silence crept in. Slowly lowering his gun, Vincent stared into your scared, watery eyes and tried to find the truth. The way you'd risked your life to save Yazoo, and the way you clung to him for dear life, made everything crystal clear. “I can see that. My apologies. I won't bother you further.” Vincent nodded, and though he wasn't happy to leave you there, he respected your choice and without another word, left.

Yazoo gently pressed the palm of his hand against your pale cheek and smiled. His smile wasn't the usual sarcastic egotistical smile you were used to seeing him wear. It was warm, compassionate and filled to the very top with emotion. “You stayed.”

The intense look he gave you caused a blush to take over your face, neck and even arms. It wasn't very often at all that Yazoo looked at you like that, and when he did, you didn't know how to react. “O-of course I stayed here. Why in the world wouldn't I have?” A little confused as to why you staying shocked him so much, you tilted your head to the side and frowned slightly. “You did want me to stay with you, didn't you?”

His soft smile twisted slightly, causing him to look much more amused now that before. “If you can't figure that out without me telling you, I think it's better if you do go. After all, I'm sure it's hard to love someone when you can't even tell if they love you back or not.” He shook his head slowly, giving him a depressed, almost hurt expression. “And I thought I was making it so clear. I guess I'll just have to try harder. If you even want to stay that is.”

“I don't want to leave you. Now stop teasing me like this.” You covered your red cheeks with your hands and sighed. “You're making my cheeks burn.”

Yazoo lifted your chin up with a single finger and softly kissed your lips. “Then I suppose you're going to be staying with me for at least a little bit longer then?” Too embarrassed to take his teasing any more, you dropped your head down to his chest, and nodded weakly. Your response caused wide grin to sweep over his face. Happier than he would ever admit, he wrapped his arms around you and kissed the top of your head. “Perfect. You had me worried for a second.”
